Brandenburg Gate

Europe, Germany 2 Comments »

The Brandenburger Tor or the Brandenburg Gate is the former city gate of Berlin, Germany. It is located west of Berlin city center and is one of the main symbols of Germany. It is located on the Pariser Platz and is the only remaining gate of a series through which one used to enter Berlin. The Brandenburg was originally built by Carl Gotthard Langhans from 1788 to 1791. It survived World War II but was badly damaged in the war. The Gate was refurbished extensively from 2000 to 2002 and was reopened to the public in 2002 to mark the 12th anniversary of German Reunification.

The Gate’s design is based upon the Propylaea, the gateway to the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The Brandenburg Gate consists of 12 Doric columns; 6 each side, forming 5 passage ways. Atop the Gate is the Quadriga, a chariot drawn by 4 horses driven by Victoria, the Roman Goddess of Victory. The Gate stands 26 meters high, 65.5 meters wide and 11 meters thick.

The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia, often simply called the La Sagrada Familia or just Sagrada Familia is a Roman Catholic Church that has been under construction in Barcelona, Spain since 1882 and is expected to complete in 2026. Sagrada Familia is designed by the renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. After his death in 1926, the construction work continued under the direction of several other architects.

The Sagrada Familia was open to tourists since 2004. Over the years, it has become one of the most popular attractions in Spain. Every part of the design of La Sagrada Familia is replete with Christian symbolism. The most striking aspects of La Sagrada Familia is its spindle shaped towers. It has 18 tall towers altogether in ascending order of height representing the Twelve Apostles, the Four Evangelists, the Virgin Mary and the tallest of all, Jesus Christ. This massive church also has 3 grand facades, namely the Nativity Façade, the Glory Façade and the Passion Façade.

Odense

Denmark, Europe 1 Comment »

The city of Odense is the third largest city in Denmark. Odense is located on the island of Funen in the central part of the country. The city is approximately 156 kilometers from Copenhagen. Perhaps what really makes Odense known to the world is the city’s status as the birthplace of the world’s famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen. During his lifetime, Andersen created many famous fairy-tales which today are internationally famous. Such fairytales include “The Little Mermaid”, “The Ugly Duckling”, “Thumbelina”, “The Emperor’s New Clothes” and “The Snow Queen”. Didn’t you read each and every one of the above stories in your childhood?

If one is in Odense, a visit to Hans Christian Andersen Museum and Hans Christian Andersen’s House is a must. Besides, Odense is also famous as the architectural jewel of Denmark. The pure Gothic style Saint Canute’s Cathedral is one of the largest and finest buildings of its kind in Denmark. Odense’s most famous landmark though, was Odinstarnet or the Odin Tower constructed in 1935. This once the second tallest tower in Europe was blown up in 1944. A 12 meters tall replica of the destroyed tower had been erected on its original site in 2004. Your tour to Odense is deemed incomplete without a visit to the Funen Village, a Danish open air museum featuring buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries.
