Aldabra Island
Africa, Seychelles October 24th, 2009Aldabra Island is the world’s second largest raised coral atoll after the Christmas Island. Aldabra Island is located in the Indian Ocean and is part of the Seychelles. The island is located approximately 1,150 kilometers southwest of Mahe, the main island of Seychelles archipelago. In fact, Aldabra Island is closer to the Mombasa of Kenya on the African coast as well as Madagascar.
Aldabra Island was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to the distinct floras and faunas on the island. The atoll is home to the world’s largest population of giant tortoises in the name of Aldabra Giant Tortoise. Besides, the island is also known for its green turtles, hawksbill turtles, hammerhead sharks, manta rays, barracudas, Aldabra rails and other bird species.
