Phuket

Asia, Thailand No Comments »

Known as “Pearl of the Andaman”, Phuket, pronounced “Poo-Ket”, is one of the most romantic places on earth. Covering an area of 550 square kilometers, Phuket is about the size of Singapore and effectively Thailand’s largest island. The most convenient way of getting in Phuket is by plane. The island has the second largest airport in Thailand in the name of Phuket International Airport.

Perhaps it was the 2004 tsunami that really made Phuket well known to the world, but the island has long been attracting tourists from all over the world. One of Phuket attractions is its beach. Being an island itself, Phuket is surrounded by beaches such as Patong Beach, Kamala Beach, Kalim Beach, Karon Beach and Rawai Beach. Patong Beach is the most popular among all due to its status as the center of Phuket’s nightlife. There are lots of bars and discotheques, not to mention blocks and blocks of massage parlors. The famous Bangla Street in Patong is where one can find all the actions in Phuket.

Phuket is surrounded by dozens of small islands. These islands attract thousands of divers each year. Among the most popular islands are Bon Island, Coral Island, Raya Island and Phi Phi Islands. Besides diving, one should also try other water sports such as snorkeling, sailing, yachting, wind surfing, deep sea fishing, sea canoeing and many more.

If you are not an adventurous person, you can indulge in some of the cultural and entertainment shows on the island. Phuket Fantasea and Simon Cabaret are among the most famous and popular. Phuket Fantasea is the Hollywood sized entertainment centre in Kamala Beach. Its “Fantasy of a Kingdom” cultural illusion show combines the beauty of Thai culture with magical effects, acrobatics and an elephant circus. Simon Cabaret meanwhile, is a popular transvestite performance on the hill just outside Patong.

Phang Nga Bay

Asia, Thailand 1 Comment »

Located approximately 75 kilometers north east from Phuket, Phang Nga Bay is a bay in the beautiful Andaman Sea with a total surface area of 400 kilometer square. It was declared as a national park since 1981.

Phang Nga is a shallow bay with 42 islands. It was said that one could walk from Phuket to Krabi when sea levels were low some 10,000 years ago. The area is made up of hundreds of limestone landforms which include limestone cliffs with caves and collapsed cave systems. These limestone landforms all have unique shape. Some look like camel hump and saw tooth while others look like animal horn. One of the most famous such landforms in Phang Nga Bay is the Koh Tapu (‘Koh’ means island and ‘Tapu’ means nail respectively in Thai language). Koh Tapu is about 20 meters tall and takes the shape of a nail. This island is also known as James Bond Island, which is the filming location of the 1974 James Bond movie “The Man with the Golden Gun”.

The best way to savor the beauty of Phang Nga Bay is to take on sea canoeing there. The following clip shows the exotic Phang Nga Bay sea cave canoeing.
