Old Town of Tunxi

Asia, China No Comments »

I had written on Mount Huang a couple of weeks ago. Another beautiful place situated within the Anhui Province, China is the Old Town of Tunxi. In fact, the old town is just located south of the Mount Huang scenic spot, and is always the first stop for those who want to travel to Mount Huang.

The Old Town of Tunxi is just made up of a street which is 1,273 meters in length and 5 to 8 meters in width. 895 meters of the street is of the pedestrian commercial street. This section is considered as the best preserved commercial street in China at the moment which embodies the Song, Ming and Qing Dynasties architectural styles. On both sides of the street, there are long lines of houses. These houses are all made up of bricks and woods and mostly are of double storey. The front of the houses is used for doing business while the back is for living and serves as a workshop. You will find Chinese paintings, inks, ink stones, Chinese traditional medicines, teahouses, inscriptions and many more on this street.

China is famous for its Five Mountains, namely Mount Song in Henan Province, Mount Tai in Shandong Province, Mount Hua in Shaanxi Province, Mount Heng in Shanxi Province and another Mount Heng in Hunan Province. One other mountain that often features in ancient Chinese poetry and artwork is Mount Huang. Poet Xu Xia Ke once wrote down, “After coming back from the Five Mountains, one will be so fascinated with the sceneries there that one will not want to look at the sceneries of other mountains. Whereas if one is coming back from Mount Huang, one will be totally subdued by its beautiful scenery that one will no longer paying attention to the Five Mountains.”

The poem above clearly highlights the beauty of Mount Huang. Mount Huang is a mountain range located in the southern part of Anhui Province, China. It is often known as the most astonishing mountain in China. Mount Huang is famous for its 4 wonders, namely the strange pines, absurd stones, cloud seas and hot springs. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. If you are still not convinced by the beauty of Mount Huang, watch the clip below.

Today, there are over 50 kilometers of footpaths built to give visitors access to the various scenic areas. There is also a cable car to bring visitors to the summit. The foot of the mountains is accessible from cities such as Hangzhou, Wuhu and Shanghai.
