There is a group of beautiful sea islands scattering around in the southern Pacific Ocean. This group of islands is called the French Polynesia. At the size of approximately 1,045 square kilometers, Tahiti is the largest and most populated island of French Polynesia. The island consists of two roughly round portions, namely Tahiti Nui (Big Tahiti) and Tahiti Iti (Small Tahiti) connected by a short Taravao Isthmus. The capital of the French Polynesia, Papeete is located on the Big Tahiti.

Tahiti Island is said to be a place on earth closest to heaven. It is an untouched and beautiful piece of land. The most popular activity on Tahiti is unarguably diving. The island of Tahiti offers some of the best scuba diving sites including the Tahiti Wall, Shark Cave, The Vavi Area and Underwater Fresh Water Springs, just to name a few. Tahiti also serves as a jumping off point to Bora Bora, Huahine, Moorea, Raiatea, Rangiroa and other islands in the archipelago. Other activities besides scuba diving are snorkeling, surfing, deep sea fishing, kite surfing, hiking, golfing and many more.

In fact, Maldives is ranked among the world’s best diving spots. Water is clean in Maldives and its superb clarity makes finding of underwater life relatively easier. However, Maldives is very expensive by Asian standards.

Venezuela’s offshore islands are always not very well known. But Islas Los Roques is an exception. Islas Los Roques is an archipelago consists of 40 bigger islands and more than 250 islets as well as cays. The archipelago is surrounded by many cays, making Islas Los Roques one of the best diving spots in the Caribbean. In fact, Islas Los Roques is the biggest and oldest marine park in the Caribbean Sea with a total area of 40.61 square kilometers. One can find countless shoals of fish and numerous corals here. The Los Roques islands had been declared a national park in 1972.

Much of the islands in the archipelago are still deserted, making it a perfect spot for bird watching. There are some 300 species of birds found in Islas Los Roques including the crested ibis that attracts worldwide attention. One can opt to stay in a submarine named Antares III. You can dive with Antares III to the 85 feet underwater world. Other activities include fishing, snorkeling and kite surfing.

Redang Island is Malaysia’s premier island resort. Located approximately 45 kilometers off the East Coast of Peninsula Malaysia, the island is the biggest of an archipelago consisting of 8 other smaller islands. Access to Redang Island is either from Merang Jetty, 30 kilometers north of Kuala Terengganu or from Kuala Terengganu itself at Syahbandar Jetty. Besides, there is also a small airport on the island operated by Berjaya Air with flights from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Snorkeling is the most popular activity on Redang Island. Many resorts offer 3 days 2 nights snorkeling package including ferry transfer to the island. Some of these resorts are Redang Pelangi Resort, Redang Bay Resort, Redang Beach Resort, Redang Holiday Beach Villa and Redang Reef Resort. Besides, scuba diving is also a popular activity on Redang Island. The largest beach on the island is Pasir Panjang Beach. The beach is divided into 2 parts, namely Pasir Panjang Besar Beach to the north and Pasir Panjang Kecil Beach to the south. The southern end of this beach has more debris from dead corals. It is painful if you walk barefoot along this end of the beach. Area around the small island in the middle of Pasir Panjang Beach called Tanjung Tengah is the nesting bay for baby sharks. Pasir Chagar Hutang or Turtle Bay in the north tip of Redang Island is a sanctuary for sea turtles.

Red Sea is considered by many as one of the world’s best diving sites. Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the most famous undersea explorer in the world once commented, “The Red Sea is a Corridor of Marvels – the happiest hours of my diving experience have been spent there” when he explored the Red Sea in 1952-53.

The Red Sea is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean, lying between Africa and Asia. The Red Sea is significant in Christianity as the Biblical Book of Exodus tells the story of how Moses led Israelites to cross the water. Today, the Red Sea is known for its marine life and corals. It is said that more than 1,200 species of fish have been found in the Red Sea, with around 10% of them cannot be found elsewhere!

There are many popular diving resorts in the Egyptian side of the Red Sea, including Ras Mohammed, SS Thistlegorm, Elphinstone, The Brothers, Dolphin Reef and Rocky Island. In between them, Ras Mohammed National Park is Egypt’s first national marine park and is also the most popular among tourists. It is located at the southern extreme of the Sinai Peninsula and can be reached from Sharm el-Sheikh, a city located on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula.
