Sinai Peninsula

Africa, Egypt 1 Comment »

The Sinai Peninsula is a triangle shaped peninsula in Egypt. Portions of Sinai Peninsula are belonged to Israel and Jordan. To the north of the peninsula is the Mediterranean Sea and to its south is the Red Sea. Sinai Peninsula connects together Africa and Southwest Asia.

Sinai Peninsula has become a popular tourist destination in recent decades due to its natural beauty both above the ground and under the water. However, perhaps it is its rich biblical history that attracts westerners to Sinai Peninsula. According to Abrahamic scripture, Mount Sinai is known as the place where the Ten Commandments were given to Prophet Moses. You should know the Ten Commandments, right? Here is a video clip by Lonely Planet showing the burning bush at the neighboring St. Katherine’s Monastery. Sunrise on Mount Sinai is exceptionally beautiful. One should also not miss out on the Colored Canyon, beautiful rock formations that reflect different colors during different time in a day.

Riding on the back of a camel from Gulf of Aqaba and Nuweiba is a good way to enjoy the excellent natural setting in Sinai Peninsula. Nuweiba itself has become a popular diving and snorkeling spot on the eastern coast of Sinai Peninsula. I shall talk about diving in the Red Sea in my future entry. Another resort town located at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula is Sharm el-Sheikh. Sharm el-Sheikh is one of the finest diving spots in the world as well as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Arab world. In fact, Sharm el-Sheikh has long been lauded as the Las Vegas of Egypt!

Sidi Bou Said

Africa, Tunisia 2 Comments »

Today entry brings you into the continent of Africa. Tunisia is a country in north Africa, and is the northernmost country on the African continent. Its northern part is situated on the coast of Mediterranean Sea, thus having a long and beautiful coastline.

One of such beautiful seaside town is Sidi Bou Said, a town of blue and white. Sidi Bou Said is located on the Mediterranean coast of Africa and is approximately 20 kilometers from the capital city of Tunis. Why blue and white? This is because the town is full of white houses with blue doors and windows. This beautiful coastal town was first discovered by French wealthy businessmen and those Europeans residing overseas over a long period of time. It was then rediscovered by Andre Gide in which the Nobel prize winner left his native France and lived in Tunis in 1942.

There are not very many things to do in Sidi Bou Said. The town has just 1 main road, full with vendors selling handicrafts and souvenirs. This road goes up to a hill. There is a café named Café des Nattes on top of the hill which overlooks the Gulf of Tunis and the marina of Sidi Bou Said. But Sidi Bou Said is definitely a place to go to get your peace of mind!
